When the Grace children go to stay at their Great Aunt Lucinda’s worn Victorian house, they discover a field guide to faeries and other creatures and begin to have some unusual experiences.

A bit of scary peril for the kids. An interesting premise and a short read, but the fairy creatures are a bit dark. Not for kids on the younger end who are sensitive to this kind of scariness (likely any child who believes strongly in fairies). Not good right before bedtime.

Sexual Content

Scary moment when a child is trapped in a dumbwaiter and hears something trying to get in. Child believes he hears a ghost. Lights go out and child alone in room with something. Girl wakes up with bruises and her hair tied to her headboard. House is thought to be haunted. A bogart freezes a child’s tadpoles.

Parents are recently divorced and the kids are angry about it and having to move. The mom is portrayed as tired and struggling. Older relative ‘old and crazy’ thinks fairy’s are bringing her food, but looks like she is starving herself to death.

My 8 year old LOVED this series and finished it in a week. He watched the movie beforehand, which I thought had one questionable part where the main boy said he hated his mom… That aside, since he gobbles up books now, I let him read the series after scanning the first book. Thanks for the review! Now I’m looking for another series he can gobble up before I can blink! Side note: He was especially excited that we found the Field Guide at the library that goes along with the storyline in the series. Added bonus!
